28-year-old male dies in fall from PSD


The Dept. of Public Safety and the Los Angeles Police Department responded to a call about a body found on the University Park Campus early Wednesday morning, and have confirmed the incident is being investigated as a suspected suicide.

The body found on the Figueroa Street side of Parking Structure D was identified as Michael McCann, the 28-year-old son of a USC faculty member, according to LAPD Sgt. John Bertino. McCann did not attend USC.

The Los Angeles County coroner’s office confirmed the identity of the body. The faculty member, a professor of philosophy and English, is a residential faculty adviser for North Residential College.

Tim Gustafson, associate professor of English and American studies and ethnicity and a residential faculty adviser for New Residential College, remembered McCann as an amicable and genuine person and said his children grew up playing with him.

“He was a beautiful kid,” Gustafson said. “He was a neighbor and a part of my extended family. My kids grew up with him.”

The victim was reported as having jumped or fallen off of the parking structure. The call came into LAPD at 7:15 a.m. Wednesday and eight LAPD officers responded by 7:19 a.m. DPS is assisting in the investigation.

Parking Structure D was temporarily closed as LAPD conducted its investigation and was reopened to the public at 10:41 a.m.

    This is such a tragedy for the university.The McCanns are the most generous, open and welcoming family Their contributions to USC are immeasurable. I pray for Ed and Linda and hope that they know the entire Trojan family supports them during this difficult time.

    I never really knew Mike, but I lived in New/North freshman year and have wonderful memories of speaking with Prof. McCann and his wife. My thoughts and prayers are with them.
