Garcetti appoints USC dean

Mayor Eric Garcetti’s office announced today that former University of Southern California Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences Associate Dean Linda Lopez will serve as Chief of the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs.

Lopez has been serving as the USC Dornsife Associate Dean for Diversity and Strategic Initiatives. She has a Ph.D. in political science from USC.

“It is a privilege and an honor to join Mayor Garcetti’s administration to help L.A. immigrants cut through red tape and make City Hall work for them,” Lopez said in a statement released by the mayor’s office.

During his time on City Council, Garcetti worked to reestablish the office. Creating an office to work with immigrants was also part of the mayor’s campaign platform.

“The Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs will play a critical role given L.A.’s large immigrant population and the national spotlight on immigration legislation,” Garcetti said in a press release.

The office will help documented and undocumented immigrants to navigate a pathway to citizenship, according to the Los Angeles Times.
