Men’s golf takes third place after second day of play

At the end of the second day of the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters in Las Vegas, the men’s golf team is in third place.

After the first day of competition, the team was in sixth place, shooting a combined 1-under 287. The second day of play fared much better for the Trojans as they settled into third place after combining for a second round 5-under 283 and moved into third at 6-under 570.

The Trojans trail the leader Oklahoma State by 12 and are 10 behind second-place Texas.

Freshman Sean Crocker finished with a 2-under 70 while senior Eric Sugimoto came in at 1-under 71 after the first day of competition. Crocker is competing for this third-straight top 5 finish. He opened up the first day with three birdies on the first nine holes before going 1-over on the back nine. At the conclusion of day one, Crocker was tied for 10th, five points back.

Sugimoto’s 1-under 71 tied his best spring round and left him tied for 16th heading into the second day. He was 1-under on the front nine holes and even on the final nine.

Sophomore Rico Hoey was tied for 27th at even 72, junior Bobby Gojuangco was tied for 50th at 2-over 74 and freshman Jonah Texeira was tied for 60th at 3-over 75 to round out the first day for the Trojans.

Crocker improved on a successful first day with an even better second day. Crocker shot a team-best 15th round in the 60s this season, a 5-under 67, while Hoey finished 3-under 69.

Crocker registered another strong round with seven birdies on the day. He went 3-under going on the first nine and 2-under on the back nine. He is tied for third at 7-under 137 (70-67), one behind the leader.

Hoey is tied for 14th at 3-under 141 (72-69). He was 2-under on the first nine holes, including an eagle on the par four fifth hole. He was still 2-under before finishing the final four holes with three birdies and a double bogey.

Sugimoto is tied for 20th at 1-under 143 (71-72), Gojuangco is tied for 57th at 5-over 149            (74-75), and Texeira is tied for 64th at 6-over 150 (75-75).

The Trojans look to continue to move up in the standing and overtake No. 1 Oklahoma State when the tournament concludes on Wednesday.
