A mere 20 minutes away from campus, sitting right on Sunset Boulevard is the small and rustic, yet lively Diablo Taco. A heavy wooden door will open its way to a dungeon-like room with brick walls and a high-top wooden table that crosses the whole restaurant. Food is self-served, with the menu displayed on a huge chalkboard across one of the walls, listing everything from tacos and quesadillas to innovative drinks like popsicle micheladas and house sangria.

Tacos come in single orders, an option that allows you to order different ones and try them all with more convenience. The tacos are plain flour tortillas with different toppings, including shrimp, pork chops and chicken. The taste per se is decent, and they definitely are a little overpriced, given that most of their specialties range from $5 to $7, and taste just as good as any taco truck in L.A. that will charge you barely $2 for just one taco.

If you do decide to go to Diablo Taco for dinner, however, you can’t leave without trying their corn dish, which consists of grilled corn off the cob in a deep bowl accompanied with paprika, cotija cheese and just the right amount of lemon truffle oil to add just the right tinge of sweet and sour.

The best part about Diablo Taco is their innovative micheladas. A michelada is a typical Mexican drink of your choice of beer blended with tomato juice, freshly squeezed lime-juice, spices and the optional hot sauce. The cool thing with Diablo Taco is that they will give you the beer in a glass and the michelada mix in the form of a popsicle. You can eat it, dip it, or let it melt inside your drink, but either way, it’s a great way to enjoy this authentic Latin American drink.

The ambience is also cool. At the entrance, they have loads of board games that you can play with your friends, from Connect Four to Apples to Apples, and even Cards Against Humanity.

The bottom line is that if you’re feeling like treating yourself on a Friday night, Diablo Taco is definitely worth the trip to Silverlake, despite its slightly expensive price range.
