The Donut Man, a.k.a. the only man I need

To kick off my tour of donut places around Los Angeles, I took a trip down the classic Route 66 to Glendora to look for the man, the myth, the legend: The Donut Man.

What I found was a small house-like building off the side of the road that was sandwiched between other small businesses and left little room for parking or seating. At a glance, The Donut Man might seem like just a typical pink-box donut place — but it’s not. It’s a place of classic and new creations all in one, and the trek to the northeast edge of L.A. County is very much worthwhile.

On any typical day, the line of customers can wrap around the building, but luckily for me and my empty stomach, the line was not too long the morning I went. When I neared the front of the line and finally caught a glimpse of the donuts on display, I noticed many recognizable flavors, such as the classic sprinkles donut, so if you’re in the mood for an oldie but a goodie, you can definitely find it here.

If you’re looking to venture out and into a new realm of donut heaven, however, I would strongly encourage you to try the strawberry donut. The donut buns alone are nothing out of the ordinary, but when combined with glazed strawberries, they surpass any appreciation you might have had for strawberries or donuts individually. These were without a doubt my favorite donuts from this trip, and I’m secretly already looking for an excuse to go back for more.

The second donut I tried was the chocolate cake donut with coconut. For some reason, my first impression was that it was going to be a rather plain donut, but I was in the mood for something with chocolate so I ordered it anyway. After trying it, I was pleasantly surprised by the texture and the combination of chocolate with just the right amount of coconut — and by “right amount,” I mean a lot.

I’ll be the first to admit that The Donut Man is somewhat out of the way just to get a treat, but if for whatever reason your late-night antics lead you to Glendora, take solace in knowing that it is open 24 hours, and that you will walk away with your midnight munchies satisfied.

The only reason I gave The Donut Man four out of five stars is because of the location. Aside from being a little inaccessible to a college student without a car, there are also no seats or tables, so customers either take their orders home, or if you’re like me and can’t wait more than five minutes after setting your eyes on a donut, you can eat them in your car or on the sidewalk. All in all, though, this is an inconvenience I will willingly overlook for the sake of eating at The Donut Man again.

The Donut Man is located at 915 E Rte 66, Glendora, CA 91740.
