Women’s soccer gets ready to kick off postseason

soccer_brian5The women’s soccer team will take on Cal State Fullerton in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon at McAlister Field.

The Women of Troy enjoyed a tremendous regular season, going 14-5-1 overall and 9-2 in the Pac-12. The team was rewarded for its efforts by being named the No. 4 seed in its quadrant of the bracket.

Cal State Fullerton is a strong side that won 16 of its 20 games this season in the competitive Big West Conference. The Titans come into the game as the clear underdogs, but USC expects to be ready and will certainly not underestimate its opposition.

The Women of Troy were ousted in the first round of the tourney last season, falling to Pepperdine on penalty kicks.

With that serving as motivation, along with the fact that this is the first ever women’s soccer postseason match at McAlister Field, head coach Keidane McAlpine and his team figure to be reasonably fired up.

USC is in the same quadrant of the bracket as Virginia, Rutgers and Notre Dame. If the Women of Troy take care of business against Cal State Fullerton, they will face the winner of the Boston College-Princeton match in the Round of 32.
