Reggie Bush’s Heisman safe for now

According to the Heisman Trophy Trust, a recent report made by Yahoo! Sports, which stated that the trust had decided to strip Reggie Bush of his 2005 Heisman Trophy, is false.

“The status of the USC/Bush matter remains unchanged. Any reports to the contrary are inaccurate,”  Trust President William J. Dockery told ESPN.

While USC’s athletic department has returned its copy of Bush’s Heisman and made an effort to remove all traces of the athlete from the school, Bush himself still has his copy of the trophy.

Bush allegedly accepted lavish benefits from outside sports agents during his years playing football for USC, and was thus recently deemed ineligible for the 2005 season by the NCAA. USC was also cited for “lack of institutional control” and put on probation for four years, suspended from bowl games for two years and received a reduction in football scholarships.

The Heisman Trophy Trust has met informally to discuss the Reggie Bush situation, but has not made a formal decision regarding the fate of his Heisman. If the Trophy Trust were to take away Bush’s Heisman Trophy, he would be the first winner to be stripped of the award in all 75 years of the Trophy’s history.

No date has been set for the official announcement on the matter.
