Whitman spends most on campaign

Meg Whitman has broken the record of having the most expensive non-presidential campaign in the history of politics, according to the National Post. Despite this, recent polls show the woman who hopes to be California’s first female governor is trailing her opponent by double-digits.

The Republican gubernatorial candidate, who is also the former CEO of eBay, has spent at least $140 million of her personal funds during the race against current state Attorney General Jerry Brown over the governorship.

However, despite the huge difference in monetary spending (Brown has invested only $11 million in his campaign), Whitman is almost 13 points behind the former governor, according to a recent Los Angeles Times/USC poll. Brown’s lead has more than doubled since a LAT/USC poll was conducted in September.

Whitman invested heavily in the Latino community, hoping to get its support, but political experts have said the recent revelation that Whitman employed an illegal immigrant and and firing her after learning of her status might have damaged a lot of the work Whitman was trying to do in the Latino community.
