UC schools face fee hikes again

University of California President Mark Yudof has proposed an 8 percent increase in student tuition fees for the next year.

Yudof said the increase comes as an attempt to close the budget deficits in the statewide public university.

“The economy remains stalled and state funding lags behind our needs by at least $1 billion. The reality is that much more must be done if the university is to keep its promise to California,” he said in an open letter to university students.

Families making less than $120,000 will not have to pay the fee increase for the next year.

His proposed plan will also increase financial aid assistance to families that make less that $80,000.
