Director Tim Hetherington dies in Lybia


Tim Hetherington, the co-director of the Academy Award-nominated documentary Restrepo, was killed in an attack in Libya Wednesday morning.

The attack was caused by a grenade, which also killed and injured several other journalists and photographers. The 41-year-old filmmaker was scheduled to be honored in Los Angeles by the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, with co-director Sebastian Junger, for his work on Restrepo. Hetherington is being remembered as a brave and dedicated  artist, who lived a life full of courage and purpose.

Hetherington’s family said in a statement, “It is with great sadness we learned that our son and brother photographer and filmmaker Tim Hetherington was killed today in Misrata, Libya by a rocket-propelled grenade. Tim will be remembered for his amazing images and his Academy Award nominated documentary Restrepo which he co-produced with his friend Sebastian Junger. Tim was in Libya to continue his ongoing multimedia project to highlight humanitarian issues during time of war and conflict. He will be forever missed.”
