USC names student-athletes of the week

Junior forward Samantha Johnson of the women’s soccer team and senior tailback Marc Tyler were named USC’s Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week on Tuesday.

Following her assist on the Trojans’ only goal at the Trojan Invitational Tournament this past weekend, Johnson was also selected as one of two USC players on the All-Tournament Team. Johnson’s assist to sophomore midfielder Autumn Altamirano in the 33rd minute gave USC an early 1-0 lead against Texas before the Longhorns pulled away with a 2-1 win in overtime Sunday at McAlister Field.

Meanwhile, Tyler turned heads after returning from a team suspension by leading all players in rushing with 113 yards on 24 carries in Saturday’s 23-14 win over Utah at the L.A. Coliseum. His six-yard run to the left edge of the end zone in the first quarter was his first touchdown of the season as well as the Pac-12’s first touchdown in conference history, giving USC an early 10-0 lead in the conference’s inaugural game.

With a reception for 19 yards to back up a 4.7-yard rushing average, Tyler returned strong-willed and ready to run after missing the first game of the season for his inappropriate comments to celebrity news outlet TMZ in July.

The soccer team plays next at Portland on Sunday at 1 p.m., while the football team hopes to rally behind Tyler’s impressive rushing against Syracuse on Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Coliseum.
