Father James Heft delivers a homily at the Cornerstone Mass and Installation at the new Our Savior Church and USC Caruso Catholic Center. The cornerstone was blessed by Pope Benedict XVI in summer 2010. The Caruso Catholic Center, located on the corner of University Avenue and Hoover Street, is scheduled to open in the fall.

USC’s SoCal VoCals sing Saturday evening at the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella West Semifinals in Bovard Auditorium. SoCal VoCals placed second behind UCLA’s Scattertones, who will advance to the national competition in New York City. SoCal VoCals won the national competition in 2008 and 2010.

The improvisational comedy group performed nonstop for 24 hours in front of Bovard Auditorium on Thursday to raise money for the group.

Nefer Fernandez, a sophomore majoring in architecture, creates a plaster mold for his sculpture project on material studies in the sculpture work area behind the Roski School of Fine Arts on Wednesday. Fernandenz, who is enrolled in ARCH 202b (Architectural Design II), created his own plaster for the project.

The USC football team practices Tuesday afternoon on Howard Jones Field. This was the team’s first practice since spring break. The Trojans are ranked No. 1 in ESPN’s Way-Too-Early Preseason Top 25. See Page 11 for Pigskin Notes from Tuesday’s practice.

Lori Andrews, a professor and associate vice president at the Illinois Institute of Technology and director of the school’s Institute of Science, Law and Technology, lectured at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism Monday about the social impact of emerging technologies.  

Steven Lamy, a professor of international relations, speaks at Doheny Memorial Library on Tuesday about international relations and linguistics preserving the legacies of past empires and creating new ethical and cultural dilemmas. The event was part of the Dornsife Commons.

Alumnus Corey White practices javelin on Cromwell Field on Monday. White, who holds the USC school record for farthest javelin throw (270 feet), is preparing for the 2012 London Olympic Games. White was 13 centimeters away from the Olympic “A” standard and qualifying for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Scott Yamano, a ’98 alumnus, receives the Alumni Entrepreneur of the Year Award from the Marshall Lloyd Greif Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at its Annual Networking Day on Saturday. Yamano is CEO of Dedicated Media, a company focused on U.S. online media sales.

Alumna Geraldine Knatz, executive director for the Port of Los Angeles, speaks to attendees of the USC Women’s Conference about working in a male-dominated field. The sold-out conference brought together more than 1,600 women in venues across campus on Thursday.
