Marijuana dispensary owners protest at city hall

About 80 medical marijuana dispensary operators and advocates gathered at City Hall on
Tuesday to hold a small rally protesting the city clerk’s announcement that only 41 of Los
Angeles’s dispensaries are operating legally.

The group conducted a small protest outside before marching into City Hall to demand that the
city council reverse the decision, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Under a city ordinance that took effect in June, officials claimed that 128 of the 169 dispensaries
that applied to remain open are ineligible to continue operating.

Many of these were not approved because of an often-overlooked requirement in the city
ordinance, which requires dispensaries to have constant management. Since registering with the city in 2007, many of
the more prominent dispensaries have added more managers.

The city will not seek to shut down the ineligible dispensaries, however, provided that they
showed intent to register and fully comply with state law.
