A not so inconspicuous remake
When Mrs. Potts sings, “Tale as old as time, true as it can be,” in Beauty and the Beast, little did she know that one tale wouldn’t be true at all.
A version of the Oscar-winning Disney classic has been recreated almost shot-for-shot by GM Toons, a Thai moviemaking company. Internet searches for GM Toons and Erawan Entertainment — the two companies mentioned in the trailer — turn up no results, however.
The Thai version copies the original almost shot-for-shot with choppy computer animation. It also features some differences in character appearance. The Beast bears a striking resemblance to the adult Simba in Disney’s The Lion King — if Simba donned some rather unfortunate-looking striped horns. And Lumiere, the beloved source of comic commentary, is downgraded to a candlestick rather than a candelabra.
Viewers of the Thai trailer, if offended by this blow to the entertainment of their youth, can find original Beauty and the Beast animation stills here.
“True as it can be,” indeed.
