Free Swag day promotes friendly sustainability

There is nothing more exciting to a college student than free swag, and on November 13, LAfreestore will offer a variety of free goods and services with everything from clothes and DVDs to tutoring and hugs. But there is a catch—shoppers are encouraged to donate their own goods from their closets, shelves and pantries.

Located at the Casa Princesa Café in North East LA, the one day event will consist of a plethora of activities besides the trading of goods; also scheduled are workshops involving gardening advice, yoga activities, knitting instruction and guitar lessons.

The event’s website cites its mission as “[building] community and [providing] an alternative to mainstream capitalism,” which would require “volunteerism, friendships, swapping, donations, giving, sharing and lots of smiles.”

Creator of LAfreestore and Cal Poly Pomona student Krisha Hernandez Pruhs told the Los Angeles Times that she “considers the project a way to evoke social sustainability and promote environmental ideas.”
