UC system approves fee hike

The UC Board of Regents approved an 8 percent tuition hike on Thursday morning for students in the statewide public school system.

The hike, which will go into effect the next school year, adds up to about an $822 fee increase for undergraduate students.

The board voted 15 to 5 in favor of the increase, with student regent Jesse Cheng and alumni regent Darek DeFreece among the “No” votes.

“Those are the ones who are silently crying. They are not at the microphone,” DeFreece said. “They are at work trying to figure out how they are going to pay for it all.”

Though families making less than $120,000 will not be affected by the hike next year, DeFreece said it is the middle class families that will suffer the most from the additional tuition fee.
