Former student whose newborn was found in dumpster ordered to jail again

A former USC student whose baby was found in a dumpster in 2005 was sent to jail Wednesday after prosecutors said she violated terms of her probation.

Holly Ashcraft, 26, a former architecture student, pleaded no contest in 2008 to a charge of child endangerment resulting in death. Earlier, prosecutors had unsuccessfully tried to convict Ashcraft of murder after her newborn son’s body was found in a dumpster near the 29th St. Cafe.

After pleading no contest to the child endangerment charge, Ashcraft was placed on five years’ probation and ordered to take pregnancy tests monthly.

On Wednesday, prosecutors told Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Kathleen A. Kennedy that Ashcraft hadn’t complied with the pregnancy testing and court-ordered counseling. Kennedy ordered Ashcraft be taken to jail without bail. Another hearing will be held on Jan. 3.
