National Signing Day: Simmons chooses North Carolina over Oregon, USC

Delvon Simmons, a four-star defensive tackle recruit from McKeesport, Pennsylvania, has signed his letter of intent with the University of North Carolina. With no shortage of suitors, Simmons had offers from USC, Oregon and Iowa among others. According to ESPN.com, he is the 25th best defensive tackle prospect in the 2011 class.

This decision is surprising to an extent, as some had speculated that he had whittled his decision down to USC and Oregon.
Nonetheless, Simmons represents a huge coup for the Tar Heels along the defensive line, as the team continues to recruit a top-20 class despite its struggles in 2010.

Undoubtedly, the acquisition of DT Christian Heyward (San Diego) lessens the sting for the Trojans—a team which needs to retool both its offensive and defensive lines.
