President’s Day weekend movie sales down
According to TheHollywoodReporter.com, preliminary box office results show a 30% decrease from last year’s President Day Weekend. Though the reasons are unclear as to why, the performers this weekend seem to go against expectations.
At number one with an estimated $21 million was the Liam Neeson thriller Unknown followed by the much buzzed about teen sci-fi I Am Number Four at a modest $19 million and the animated comedy Gnomeo & Juliet coming in also with $19 million.
Unknown follows in Neeson’s last international thriller, Taken, which was released last January to a robust box office success.
I Am Number Four, which attempted to gain the audiences for movies like Harry Potter and Twilight, failed to garner the kind of mass hysteria among tweens, despite a production budget of a hefty $60 million and the backing of superstar producer Michael Bay. The film was also released in IMAX theaters and distributed by Buena Vista.
