Nation reflects on 10th anniversary of Sept. 11 attacks
With today marking the 10th anniversary of the infamous Sept.11 attacks, people, organizations and media across the country are coming together to commemorate the event.
The 9/11 Memorial, located at the site of the World Trade Center, will be officially dedicated today and opened to the public Monday. The memorial contains two reflecting pools edged by bronze panels inscribed with the names of every person that died in the 1993 and 2001 attacks.
On TV, numerous special showings, documentaries and unique programming will run in honor of the anniversary. Fox and CBS will air special anniversary packages, and CBS will air a documentary on “9/11: Ten Years Later.”
In New York, the art world will host a succession of cultural events in honor of Sept. 11. These include a day-long concert called “Music After,” which will be held for free in SoHo, a screening of the film “25th hour” at the Lincoln Center, a performance by the New York Philharmonic of Mahler’s “Resurrection” and a performance by the Wordless Music Orchestra at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
USC will be holding its own special service in remembrance of Sept. 11 at Bovard today at noon. Led by President C. L. Max Nikias, other speakers at the event include Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Dean of Religious Life Varun Soni, Undergraduate Student Government President Monish Tyagi and Catholic, Muslim and Protestant campus ministers.
Student engagement and community service will be focal topics of the event, where students are welcome to participate in interfaith community projects in the afternoon following the service.
