USC preps for season with intrasquad scrimmage

The Cardinal team defeated the Gold team, 275-263, in the Trojans’ annual intrasquad scrimmage Friday at McDonald’s Swim Stadium.

The meet came down to the 300-yard women’s freestyle relay, where the Cardinal was able to pull away and win the match.

Sophomore Yumi So and freshmen Chase Bloch and Dimitri Colupaev led the Cardinal team.

So won the 25- and 75-yard backstroke events, while Bloch won the 25- and 75-yard fly. Colupaev won the 25-yard breaststroke and 100-yard individual medley. Junior Alex Lendrum was also a winner in the 300-yard individual medley.

The winning 300-yard freestyle team was led by So, sophomore Christal Simms, sophomore Haley Anderson and freshman Stina Gardelli.

Though the Gold men’s team was able to respond with a win in its 300-yard medley, it was not enough to hold off the Cardinal.

Gold’s Kate Shumway took home a win in the 25-yard freestyle while Anderson took home the top spot in the 300-freestyle. Simms (25-yard free), Gardell (100-yard individual medley) and junior Victoria Ishimatsu (1-meter dive) were winners in their respective events as well.

The Trojans begin their season Oct. 22 against Cal State Fullerton at home, while the Women of Troy will face Washington State from Oct. 21 to Oct. 22 in Pullman, Wash.
