Haute Highlights

“Gatz”

Thursday, Nov. 29 – Sunday, Dec. 9, Various Times

Roy and Edna Disney/CALARTS Theater

Do you consider The Great Gatsby one of your favorite reads? Have you been meaning to catch up on the novel before your English final? Are you excited by incredibly long pieces of theater?

If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions, get yourself a seat for “Gatz,” the eight-hour dramatic reading of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s great American novel.

And should the performance’s length deter you, perhaps the two intermissions and one-hour dinner break will make the event more appealing.

Tickets begin at $105 for students.

LA Auto Show

Friday, Nov. 30 – Sunday, Dec. 9, Various Times

Los Angeles Convention Center

Car enthusiasts and tech nerds alike gather at the LA Auto Show, Los Angeles’ enormous, 10-day display of all things modern and vehicular.

A $12 admission fee will grant viewing access to some of the most futuristic cars about to hit the market — more than 40 vehicles will debut at the event. There will also be driving experiences available on both actual road and at video game stations.

NAS, Lauryn Hill

Friday, Nov. 30 – Saturday, Dec. 1, 7 p.m.

The Wiltern

“Music is supposed to inspire / How come we ain’t gettin’ no higher?”

Or so sings Lauryn Hill on “Superstar,” a popular track from her 1998 album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

Well, Lauryn, perhaps it’s because concert opportunities like this are rare occurrences. This weekend, Hill teams up with dynamic hip-hop mogul NAS for their joint Life is Good/Black Rage tour. Hill will showcase her gritty alto alongside new NAS hits such as “Daughters” and “Bye Baby.”

With two leaders of the hip-hop movement uniting for two nights of music, this concert will leave listeners with sounds as fine as “Cherry Wine.”

Tickets start at $62.50.

Holiday Lamplight Celebration

Saturday, Dec. 1 – Sunday, Dec. 2, 4 p.m.

Heritage Square Museum

Welcome December in a traditional fashion with the Heritage Square Museum at its Holiday Lamplight Celebration.

Sip on a cup of steaming apple cider as you take a stroll among some of Los Angeles’ lovely historic Victorian houses. Or, just enjoy a new interpretation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

Whatever you decide, be sure to arrive early. The popular program often attracts large crowds.

Adult tickets are $20 and should be purchased in advance.
