USC ends play at tournament in Round of 16
The men’s tennis team’s play at the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships came to a close on Saturday when junior Nick Crystal lost in the Round of 16. Crystal, who is ranked No. 42 in the nation, was the final Trojan competing in the tournament in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Crystal pulled off back-to-back upsets to reach the Round of 16, including an upset in the Round of 32 against Kentucky’s Beck Pennington 6-4, 6-2. In the Round of 16, Crystal faced Ohio State’s Hugo de Feo, who defeated Crystal 6-3, 7-6 to end Crystal and USC’s play in the tournament.
Senior Max de Vroome also had a good showing at the event before being eliminated in the Round of 32. De Vroome entered the match with a four-match win streak, earning him the No. 61 spot in the country. His streak was snapped, however, by No. 22 Andre Goransson, 7-5, 6-2.
Crystal and the Trojans will return to action on Oct. 15 at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships in Malibu.
This appears to be a very down year for the tennis team. No genuine leader to rally around. Don’t understand why Coach Smith has not recruited well the last couple of years after the program reached the highest level nationally?
