Q&A: What is Elijah Stewart’s ideal date?
The Daily Trojan had the opportunity to sit down with sophomore guard Elijah Stewart to get to know him and his teammates a little better. Stewart is currently averaging 10.1 points and 3.7 rebounds a game while shooting 44.4 percent from the field overall and 42.7 percent from behind the arc. Here’s what he had to say:
Daily Trojan: What’s your favorite basketball memory?
Elijah Stewart: My best basketball memory that I can tell is when my high school team went to Hawaii [for a tournament].
DT: When was the first time you dunked?
ES: In a game, ninth grade, and it was an and-one.
DT: What’s your go-to dunk?
ES: Classic windmill.
DT: Who on the team is the best dancer?
ES: Best dancer? Outside of me, probably Shaqquan [Aaron]. He knows his moves that don’t make him look awkward.
DT: Best rapper?
ES: Julian [Jacobs]. It’s not even close, he is by far the best.
DT: Who is your favorite superhero?
ES: I just started watching Young Justice, and they’re big on the sidekicks coming up, so Aqualad, because he’s the only black superhero, and also Green Arrow.
DT: What is your spirit animal?
ES: Peacock, they look so nice, but they don’t let you get close to them, and I don’t like people touching me. You can look from a distance, but you can’t touch.
DT: But, you play basketball…?
ES: Oh for sure, and if you notice, I try to avoid all types of contact.
On a serious note, they say people have three faces, and basketball is just one of my faces.
DT: What other sports could you play at USC?
ES: I could definitely walk-on track. For sure, football as a wide receiver. Tennis, I don’t think I could walk-on to the tennis squad. I couldn’t play water polo. Water polo players are crazy, mad respect there. I could for sure get baseball too. Put me in left field though, I ain’t trying to get too much action on defense; I’m more of a hitter.
DT: What is your favorite place you have visited?
ES: Italy. It was for basketball, but the competition was pretty good, but not as developed as here.
DT: What is your favorite place on campus?
ES: Campus Center is cool. I like Ground Zero on Mondays because that’s Open Mic Night, and you can hear awkward stand-up comedy.
DT: What is your favorite class?
ES: Dance class over the summer. It was traditional dance; we focused on ballroom.
DT: So you can take a girl out dancing?
ES: No. But I do know the different kinds of ballroom dances, but I would need to refresh myself on the material.
DT: What is your favorite food?
ES: That’s a tough one. I love food. I am a food connoisseur. I would recommend Flossie’s. It’s somewhere around the Forum. It’s like soul food, Louisiana type food.
DT: What is your favorite pro team?
ES: Warriors
DT: Have you been a fan before this season?
ES: Oh for sure, even when [Steph] Curry was out there rolling his ankles every game.
DT: Who is your favorite basketball player?
ES: Probably Curry because not just up on the court, but he’s a family man. He isn’t around doing any weird stuff.
DT: What’s your ideal first date?
ES: For sure, first date. I’m taking a girl to … Hold up, I really got to think about this. The first date, you don’t want to go sit down and eat; y’all don’t really know each other. That’s not really interactive. You don’t want to take them to the movies ’cause you don’t get to talk … Like what did y’all do? You just sat next to each other for two hours. So I’m going to take you … We got to work on some team-building skills, so we’re about to go paintballing.
