Daily Trojan Magazine

Letter from the editor — Summer 2023

By JASON PHAM

I never really liked short stories. Reading short stories for me always felt like finishing a new TV show you just binge-watched and not knowing what to read or watch next. Sure, short stories and articles give you all the details immediately, but, for me at least, I want to know what the subject is feeling, how their character grows and the passion that drives them. So naturally, as a journalism major myself, I gravitate toward reading content-rich, feature-length articles.

Features are fluid. Magazine and feature writing have the opportunity to take a deep dive into complex, personable stories that encapsulate the people around us. Ranging from standard news to pop culture, these long-form articles cover different cross-sections of our community that writers typically struggle to find space for in print publications. Because of the word count limitations and lack of available space in print, feature stories are often cut short of their potential with unfinished thoughts that — for me — leave me craving for that extra, personal droplet of detail.

In our first-ever online Magazine publication, I see a new opportunity for feature writing. The Daily Trojan Magazine is an online-based publication catered to long-form, investigative articles. This magazine, I believe, will not only serve as a new outlet for storytelling and story-spreading, but also as a space for stories to have the sky as their limit, and to continue investigating the deep sea of stories that deserve to be told through magazine and feature writing.
