No. 19 USC added another win to its streak on the road by defeating Washington 3-0 this past Sunday.

Back-to-back road games did not seem to be a problem for USC as the team took two wins this week in Washington. The Trojans are now 3-0 in Pac-12 play and 7-2 overall. Their win streak has extended to four after previously beating No. 23 Washington State last Thursday 2-1.

A total of 1,597 fans attended the game, making it USC’s second-highest attended match this season. Fans were in high spirits as Washington (5-4-2, 0-3 Pac-12) hosted its first Pride Day in the school’s athletic history. The Huskies warmed up in “Love Unites” shirts while fans celebrated with pride flags and gear.

USC controlled the field with four shots on goal out of 10 total shots as opposed to Washington’s one shot on goal out of six. The Trojans played a bit more aggressively, earning 10 fouls and one yellow card. Despite giving up numerous set-piece opportunities, the Trojans managed to hold Washington scoreless, with sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Dickinson saving Washington’s only shot on goal.

Head Coach Jane Alukonis also made use of substitutions with a total of eight. Only two players, Dickinson and freshman defender Alyssa Gonzalez, played the full 90 minutes. Substitutes averaged 27 minutes for USC, with two of the 10 shots coming from these substitutes.

“The group of players that we have this year, just each and every one of them are amazing soccer players,” said Alukonis in an interview Sept. 18. “High soccer IQ, very smart, hardworking young ladies … I feel really good about each and every player on our roster.”

The Trojans got going early, with junior forward/defender Izzy Kimberly scoring her first goal of the season less than six minutes into the game off an assist from senior defender/midfielder Zoe Burns. Burns is now tied for most assists on the team this season, with Kimberly at a total of four.

Washington did not have their first shot until 23:48, and in the second half, USC sealed the game, putting two away within two minutes of each other. The first was scored at 73:32 when freshman forward/midfielder Florianne Jourde found an opportunity to dribble through the Huskies’ defense.

Not long after, junior midfielder Helena Sampaio was assisted by Kimberly and senior forward/defender Kayla Colbert marking Colbert’s third assist this season in the 75-minute.

Kimberly was involved in a lot of play down the left during the first half and continued to make a difference throughout the rest of the game. She managed two shots in 61 minutes of play, one goal and one assist. Out of the three goal-scoring plays, Kimberly was involved in two.

An injury occurred for the Trojans during the 85-minute when junior forward BK Harris went down after a defensive play. After being subbed on in the 76-minute, Harris had to be carried off the field.

The team incorporated a blend of aggression and patience to overcome the Huskies. After a quick start, USC was comfortable slowing the game down by passing between Gonzalez, Dickinson and graduate midfielder/defender Kayla Duran in the back line before mounting attacks. In most high-pressure situations, they found a way to work out of their half.

“Our goal is to win the conference,” said Alukonis in an interview on Sept 18. “Going in and starting out strong is super important because you don’t get games back.”

USC looks to keep the momentum going during Pac-12 play when the Trojans face Oregon (0-9-2, 0-3) at McAlister Field Thursday at 3 p.m.
