After hourslong standoff, suspect in student residence burglary arrested

After negotiations failed, police allowed the suspect to stay at an abandoned residence overnight and put him in custody the next morning.

UPDATE (1:05 p.m.): Police arrested the suspect at around 10:20 a.m. Friday, Department of Public Safety Assistant Chief David Carlisle confirmed to the Daily Trojan. Officers from DPS and the Los Angeles Police Department arrived at the property Friday morning, and LAPD escorted the suspect outside without any visible struggle.

UPDATE (April 5 at 1:01 a.m.): A TrojansAlert message stated that police activity had concluded at 12:39 a.m. The suspect, however, has remained at the house. A reporter standing below threw him a beer.An officer with the LAPD told the Daily Trojan that they were leaving because the suspect would likely be less annoyed without a police presence and come down on his own.After the LAPD left, people gathered around the house while the suspect stood on the outside, offering him beer and pizza. After some time, the suspect re-entered the abandoned home through a window.

UPDATE (9:56 p.m.): The Los Angeles Fire Department has set up a ladder to allow officers into a building next door. DPS Assistant Chief David Carlisle told the Daily Trojan that the police and the suspect are in in a “stalemate” but no weapons are involved as of now.

The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating the burglary of a USC student’s residence on West 30th Street between Shrine Place and Royal Street, Department of Public Safety Assistant Chief David Carlisle confirmed to the Daily Trojan Thursday evening.

The burglary suspect is now in a nearby abandoned structure, at 720 West 30th Street, Carlisle said. The suspect has broken several windows and may have set some small fires. The Los Angeles Fire Department is on standby, and the LAPD’s Mental Evaluation Unit is negotiating with the suspect.
