Keck workers begin strike authorization vote

Voting began Thursday morning and ends on Aug. 21.

By BENJAMIN GAMSON

Workers at the Keck School of Medicine and Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center will begin voting Thursday on whether to authorize a strike, they wrote in a statement Wednesday.

The strike is in response to a University proposal that includes “salary freezes and potential higher health care costs,” wrote Francisco Cendejas, a National Union of Healthcare Workers Southern California Hospital Division director, in a statement Thursday.

Voting opened Thursday at 6 a.m. and will remain open until Aug. 21 at 8 p.m. If a strike is authorized it gives the bargaining committee the ability to call for a strike but does not guarantee a strike will take place.

“We agreed to continue negotiations in the coming weeks, but made it clear that we are voting to strike,” the union wrote Wednesday.

Keck workers last went on strike in February 2016. The one-day strike demanded better wages and a plan to address short-staffing.
