At the Big Ten Women’s Soccer Tournament in St. Louis, No. 1-seeded USC was unable to put away semifinal opponent Rutgers in regulation, falling 3-0 on penalty kicks.
The Trojans (15-1-3, 10-0-1 Big Ten) struggled to produce on offense throughout the afternoon at CityPark, missing multiple on-goal opportunities throughout the first half.
The Trojans’ only goal came two minutes into the second half, when senior forward Simone Jackson fired in a goal to give USC a 1-0 advantage. In short order, Rutgers sophomore forward Ashley Baran evened the score minutes later, darting in a header to even the scoreline. Despite dominating possession and outshooting the Scarlet Knights by a 26-11 margin, the score was knotted at 1-1 after 90 minutes.

In overtime, the Trojans outshot their opponent 8-0, but two key saves by redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Bodmer kept Rutgers alive.
After overtime, Bodmer stopped all three of USC’s penalty kick attempts, leaving the game on the shoulders of graduate goalkeeper Laurence Gladu. Gladu was able to make contact with two of Rutgers’ three penalty shots, but both fell into the net, giving the Scarlet Knights a 3-0 advantage that ended the match.
Rutgers (11-3-5, 6-2-3) will take on UCLA in the Big Ten Women’s Soccer Championship on Sunday at CityPark. The Trojans will return home to Los Angeles and await the NCAA selection committee’s seeding decision for this month’s NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship. The selection show will air on NCAA.com Monday at 1 p.m.
We are the only independent newspaper here at USC, run at every level by students. That means we aren’t tied down by any other interests but those of readers like you: the students, faculty, staff and South Central residents that together make up the USC community.
Independence is a double-edged sword: We have a unique lens into the University’s actions and policies, and can hold powerful figures accountable when others cannot. But that also means our budget is severely limited. We’re already spread thin as we compensate the writers, photographers, artists, designers and editors whose incredible work you see in our daily paper; as we work to revamp and expand our digital presence, we now have additional staff making podcasts, videos, webpages, our first ever magazine and social media content, who are at risk of being unable to receive the support they deserve.
We are therefore indebted to readers like you, who, by supporting us, help keep our paper daily (we are the only remaining college paper on the West Coast that prints every single weekday), independent, free and widely accessible.
Please consider supporting us. Even $1 goes a long way in supporting our work; if you are able, you can also support us with monthly, or even annual, donations. Thank you.
