Tenants rights attorney Ysabel Jurado won the election to be the Los Angeles City Council Representative for District 14. The Highland Park native earned 55.8% of the vote, according to the L.A. County election results website, defeating incumbent Kevin de León, who held office since 2020. Jurado is the first Filipino to be elected to the L.A. City Council. She will also be the only openly queer member of the council during her term.

Jurado is a lifelong resident of Highland Park who attended Pasadena City College and UCLA for her bachelor’s degree. She continued her education at UCLA and received her Juris Doctor degree. She is the daughter of Filipino immigrants and single mother to her daughter, Stella.

Jurado ran a progressive, grassroots campaign since it began in 2021, focusing on issues such as affordable housing, public safety that hold police accountable and climate justice. According to a campaign press release, she and volunteers knocked on 83,000 doors throughout the election cycle. She also held local rallies each weekend

The campaign officially declared victory in a statement released the afternoon of Nov. 7. In the statement, Jurado wrote the win is for her community, which helped the campaign advertise, develop policies and register “neglected” voters in Skid Row. Jurado also wrote that her victory is a testament to the fact that her district responded to a campaign of anti-Trump values.

“When we center the real needs of voters, we win. Our neighbors in CD-14 have shown that Los Angeles can and will lead the way forward, demonstrating what progressive, anti-Trump leadership looks like in action,” Jurado wrote.

In March, Jurado not only qualified for the November election but received the most votes of the then eight candidates running for the District 14 seat, surpassing de León by around 400 votes.

After the primary, Jurado gained an endorsement from the Los Angeles Times, which had previously endorsed Assemblymember Miguel Santiago. Other endorsements included Councilwomen Nithya Raman and Eunisses Hernandez, State Senator Lola Smallwood-Cuevas, and the Sunrise Movement.

As the representative for L.A.’s 14th council district, Jurado will oversee the area containing USC’s Health Sciences Campus — which has been the subject of a few recent controversies regarding gentrification and the building of the USC Discovery and Translational Hub. Before the March primary, Jurado told the Daily Trojan she wants to ensure that students can enjoy the benefits and amenities of the area without Infringing on the community already living there.
