Eight schools announce commencement speakers

Speakers include choreographers, judges and entrepreneurs.

Commencement speakers for the Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy, Kaufman School of Dance, Gould School of Law, Chan Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, Keck School of Medicine, Leventhal School of Accounting, School of Architecture and Dworak-Peck School of Social Work were recently announced.

The School of Physical Therapy’s commencement speaker will be athlete and entrepreneur Wilfred Uytengsu. A USC alum, Uytengsu earned a place on the USC men’s swim team in 1979 after an injury led doctors to believe he would never compete again. In a statement released by the School of Physical Therapy, Uytengsu said he had a high level of respect for physical therapists as he had “seen how their expert care can improve a person’s quality of life and athletic performance.” The ceremony will take place May 16 at 4:30 p.m. in Bovard Auditorium. 

Mandy Moore, a choreographer and director, will be the commencement speaker for Kaufman. Moore was the first person to choreograph for the Golden Globe Awards, Academy Awards, Grammy Awards and Emmy Awards in the same year. She also served as the choreographer for Taylor Swift’s “The Eras World Tour. The ceremony will take place May 16 at 9 a.m. in Bovard Auditorium.

Gould’s undergraduate and juris doctorate commencement speaker will be former congressman and voting rights advocate Beto O’Rourke; the graduate and international programs’ commencement speaker will be General Court of the European Union judge Pēteris Zilgalvis. 

O’Rourke has also served as a city council representative and is the author of “We’ve Got to Try,” a book that tells the stories of civil and voting rights champions. Zilgalvis, a USC alum, has written extensively about innovation, environmental and artificial intelligence laws. Both ceremonies will take place May 16 at the USC Village Great Lawn: the undergraduate and JD ceremony at 9 a.m. and the graduate and IP ceremony at 1 p.m..

Swati Shah, the director and founder of Ascend Rehab Services, will be the keynote speaker for Chan’s commencement ceremony. Ascend Rehab Services is a rehabilitation company focused on occupational therapy, speech therapy and specialized instruction for children and their families. The Chan’s ceremony will take place May 16 at 4:30 p.m. at Epstein Family Plaza.

Keck’s commencement speaker will be Jasmine Abrams, the founder and CEO of the Thrive Institute for Professional Development. Abrams also serves as a research scientist in public health at the Yale School of Public Health, where she studies the sexual and maternal health of women of African ancestry. Abrams will speak at the ceremonies for Keck’s doctoral and master’s programs, medical degree program, and the Department of Population and Public Health Sciences. All three ceremonies will take place May 17 at Galen Center.

Adrienne Trimble, the senior vice president and global chief inclusion officer for Visa, will be the keynote speaker for the School of Social Work’s commencement ceremony. Trimble previously served as the first Vice President and Chief Diversity and Culture Officer for Sysco Corporation, a food distributor. The ceremony will take place May 16 at 4:30 p.m. at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Trudi Sandmeier, president of the Historic Preservation Education Foundation, will be the keynote speaker for the School of Architecture’s commencement ceremony. Sandmeier is the co-editor of the 2019 “Routledge Companion to Global Heritage Conservation” and previously worked as the USC Heritage Conservation program director. The ceremony will take place May 16 at 9 a.m. at Founder’s Park.

Michael Karlin, founding partner of business management firm Nigro Karlin Segal Feldstein & Bolno, will be the commencement speaker for Leventhal. Karlin received his undergraduate degree from the Marshall School of Business in 1976 and his master’s degree from Leventhal in 2009. He currently serves on Leventhal’s board of advisors. The ceremony will take place May 16 at 1 p.m. at McCarthy Quad.
