Witness movie magic under the stars
Outdoor summer movie screenings kick off across Los Angeles.
Outdoor summer movie screenings kick off across Los Angeles.

A night at the cinema in Los Angeles is inherently a magical experience. This is La-La Land, after all — the city that lives and breathes movies. But come summer, Angelenos get double the fun. Light pollution be damned, parks, cemeteries and rooftops all become venues for fun outdoor film screenings under the stars.
And though this list covers many of this summer’s outdoor screening series, there are dozens of great indoor screenings happening every week at iconic venues across the city, like the New Beverly, Vista, Egyptian, Brain Dead, Vidiots, Academy Museum and more. There’s truly something for everyone, so bring your friends, family, a date or a combination of all three.
Moonlight Movies on the Beach
This venue is the most college student-friendly, coming in at the glorious price of free admission. Moonlight Movies on the Beach has six iconic films lined up for the summer, including “Grease” (1978), “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” (1986) and “10 Things I Hate About You” (1999). Located at Granada Beach in the city of Long Beach, guests are encouraged to bring their own blankets, chairs and food, but local vendors are also available. All movies start at sunset, and parking is free but limited after 6 p.m.
Rooftop Cinema Club
Rooftop Cinema Club has locations across the country, including a theater based in Downtown L.A. This doesn’t come at the expense of sound quality, though, as the theater provides viewers with headphones for each screening. There are several series, including Pride Month, Celebrating Black Cinema and Fourth of July Weekend, and they even have dog-friendly evenings.
Check their calendar for their great selection of classic rom-coms and comedies. Prices start at $25 before fees, and there is a student discount of 10% with a valid ID, class schedule or discount code provided before checkout. Come early to grab snacks or visit the bar.
Cinespia
Running their summer screenings at the iconic Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Cinespia encourages guests to bring blankets, pillows and low chairs. Picnics are welcome, so bring whatever dinner you’d like, including beer and wine. The evening also includes a photobooth and DJ.
Prices start at $25 before fees, with special fireworks show film screenings on July 4 and 5 coming in at twice the cost. Screenings include “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” (2019), “Casablanca” (1942) and “Top Gun” (1986).
Montalbán Theatre
At the historic Montalbán Theatre, located in the heart of Hollywood, tickets are $29 before fees and include complimentary popcorn. Their deal for two, which is $50 before fees, also includes bottomless popcorn and a champagne toast. Screenings include Los Angeles-set classics “Chinatown” (1974) and “Heat” (1995), as well as a special discussion for the cult film “Jawbreaker” (1999). The venue is easy to access via the Metro — just take the red line to Hollywood and Vine.
Street Food Cinema
In case the name didn’t give it away, Street Food Cinema combines movies with street food, games, live music and more. Their website lets you know what food trucks, activities, and artists will be present at each event ahead of time. General Admission starts at $22 before fees, with prices increasing at the door.
Stick around after summer, because in September, they’ll be hosting the beloved “La La Land” (2016) live in concert with composer Justin Hurwitz. Screened and performed at the Los Angeles State Historic Park, that event has its own separately tiered pricing.
We are the only independent newspaper here at USC, run at every level by students. That means we aren’t tied down by any other interests but those of readers like you: the students, faculty, staff and South Central residents that together make up the USC community.
Independence is a double-edged sword: We have a unique lens into the University’s actions and policies, and can hold powerful figures accountable when others cannot. But that also means our budget is severely limited. We’re already spread thin as we compensate the writers, photographers, artists, designers and editors whose incredible work you see in our paper; as we work to revamp and expand our digital presence, we now have additional staff making podcasts, videos, webpages, our first ever magazine and social media content, who are at risk of being unable to receive the support they deserve.
We are therefore indebted to readers like you, who, by supporting us, help keep our paper independent, free and widely accessible.
Please consider supporting us. Even $1 goes a long way in supporting our work; if you are able, you can also support us with monthly, or even annual, donations. Thank you.
