The University laid off 142 employees across the University Park Campus, according to a notice filed Friday with the state and city. The number of layoffs was first reported by Morning, Trojan.
The latest layoffs will go into effect between Oct. 4 and Nov. 5. The notice included many administrative positions, service positions and professor positions, though it did not indicate specific departments.
The breadth of the layoffs encompass 92 positions, including 15 senior positions, 10 adjunct assistant professors and 25 managerial positions. A part-time lecturer and program specialist had their hours cut by at least half.
Administrative assistant, food service assistant manager, program specialist and senior library assistant positions also saw large cuts, each losing six staff members.
With a growing list of layoffs as well as property sales, the University continues to see the effects of budget cuts as the administration addresses a more than $200 million operating deficit.
Interim President Beong-Soo Kim publicly revealed the operating deficit from fiscal year 2025 in an email to faculty and staff July 14. The University is implementing layoffs, selling unused properties and adjusting compensation for the most highly paid employees, according to the email.
The University has laid off at least 342 employees since early July according to notices with the state. Previously, the Office of Cybersecurity cut all its positions, Athletics eliminated 12 jobs, the USC health system laid off 89 employees and the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism laid off 13 employees according to Annenberg Media.
The University wrote in Friday’s notice that it anticipates more layoffs and hour reductions, but did not clarify any dates or numbers to the City of Los Angeles Economic and Workforce Development Department.
We are the only independent newspaper here at USC, run at every level by students. That means we aren’t tied down by any other interests but those of readers like you: the students, faculty, staff and South Central residents that together make up the USC community.
Independence is a double-edged sword: We have a unique lens into the University’s actions and policies, and can hold powerful figures accountable when others cannot. But that also means our budget is severely limited. We’re already spread thin as we compensate the writers, photographers, artists, designers and editors whose incredible work you see in our paper; as we work to revamp and expand our digital presence, we now have additional staff making podcasts, videos, webpages, our first ever magazine and social media content, who are at risk of being unable to receive the support they deserve.
We are therefore indebted to readers like you, who, by supporting us, help keep our paper independent, free and widely accessible.
Please consider supporting us. Even $1 goes a long way in supporting our work; if you are able, you can also support us with monthly, or even annual, donations. Thank you.
