The University laid off or reduced hours for an additional 295 employees across the University Park and Health Sciences campuses according to two notices filed with the state and city on Sept. 11 and 14. This is the largest batch of layoffs so far, encompassing professors, an associate vice provost and dozens of researchers across the two campuses. The number was first reported by Morning, Trojan.
Documents show USC laid off 135 employees at UPC citing budget reductions. The largest number of layoffs came from staff in research positions, including 27 associate research administrators and 15 research administrators.
The University also laid off higher administrative positions, including an associate vice provost, the associate director of USC Hospitality and 10 directors. Two positions had reduced hours.
HSC layoffs are staggered across 10 dates, with the University also citing budget woes. According to the notice, the University laid off 158 employees. The layoffs included 33 professors — six of whom will be let go at the end of December — as well as 21 research employees and eight payroll employees.
Keck Medicine of USC and the Keck School of Medicine of USC leadership wrote in an Aug. 5 memo that the University would have completed most layoffs by the end of that week. Eighty-nine employees were laid off on Aug. 7 across the USC health system.
Interim President Beong-Soo Kim announced that the University had a $200 million operating deficit in fiscal year 2025 in an email to faculty and staff July 14. To address the deficit, the University is implementing layoffs, selling unused properties and adjusting compensation for the most-paid employees.
Since July 14, USC has laid off at least 637 employees according to state data. Kim later wrote that the plan to reduce USC’s operating costs and address the structural deficit is “working” in an Aug. 27 memo.
“While these actions are necessary to ensure our university’s future, the resulting layoffs are difficult and disheartening in so many ways,” Kim wrote in the memo. “To each and every impacted member of our Trojan Family, I want to extend my deepest compassion and gratitude for your service to USC.”
Previous layoffs included the Office of Cybersecurity cutting all its positions, Athletics eliminating 12 jobs, and the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism laying off 13 employees.
The University wrote in Tuesday’s notice that it anticipates more layoffs and hour reductions in the future, but did not clarify any dates to the City of Los Angeles Economic & Workforce Development Department.
We are the only independent newspaper here at USC, run at every level by students. That means we aren’t tied down by any other interests but those of readers like you: the students, faculty, staff and South Central residents that together make up the USC community.
Independence is a double-edged sword: We have a unique lens into the University’s actions and policies, and can hold powerful figures accountable when others cannot. But that also means our budget is severely limited. We’re already spread thin as we compensate the writers, photographers, artists, designers and editors whose incredible work you see in our paper; as we work to revamp and expand our digital presence, we now have additional staff making podcasts, videos, webpages, our first ever magazine and social media content, who are at risk of being unable to receive the support they deserve.
We are therefore indebted to readers like you, who, by supporting us, help keep our paper independent, free and widely accessible.
Please consider supporting us. Even $1 goes a long way in supporting our work; if you are able, you can also support us with monthly, or even annual, donations. Thank you.
