As the lights dimmed at the Kia Forum on Saturday and “party 4 u” by Charli xcx blared, a sold-out arena of fans buzzed with anticipation before Tate McRae geared up to take the stage for the very last time on her Miss Possessive World Tour.

The Canadian-born singer kicked off the tour last March and has since played 80 shows around the world. McRae embarked on this tour in support of her widely successful third album, “So Close to What,” which became her first project to hit Number 1 on the Billboard 200.

This tour marks the first time that McRae has headlined arena-sized venues, though turnout proved she was ready for the task.

“It’s been kind of crazy to see how much she’s blown up into the mainstream,” said longtime fan and concertgoer Danielle Anz. ”Going from playing really small theaters to seeing her play arenas has been really cool.”

McRae’s set began with a boom as all the lights in the arena went dark. A video introduction revealed McRae sitting with her back toward the audience in a chair that read “Miss Possessive” as she surveyed the arena through security cameras, putting fans on the big screen as excitement grew among the crowd.

The buildup eventually led to McRae strutting onto stage as she snapped at the audience to “get your hands off my man.” This warning introduced the first song of the night, the titular “Miss possessive,” a motif that emulated confidence and set the tone for the rest of the show.

“This show is so special and just so different from anything she’s ever done,” said 24-year-old concertgoer Angelo Carletta. “I feel like all of us in the fandom have become so much closer to her. This is a huge milestone for her.”

McRae kept the energy high by following with “No I’m not in love,” a high-octane pop song complete with a dance break, extravagant fire effects and a loud bang of fireworks at the end of the last chorus.

As McRae moved into the second act of the show, she delved into “Purple lace bra,” a song about her experience as a woman in the public eye, feeling overly sexualized by the media.

Taking a break from the high-energy choreography, McRae slowed it down and moved to her B-stage, where she sang “Greenlight,” a ballad about how difficult it can be to enter into a new relationship after being hurt in the past. As the chorus builds, McRae belted the lyrics, “I’m still waitin’ at the greenlight / to tell you what I feel like, but I can’t go.”

In between songs, she took a moment to talk to the crowd.

“This tour has been the tour of my dreams, and I’m so grateful and I’m so thankful … it’s been such an insane year,” McRae said between tears while talking about the tour coming to a close.

Vulnerable moments such as these are why many fans feel connected to McRae. Concertgoer Elle Fowler, a 19-year-old business owner who flew in from Manchester, England, to see the show, has been following McRae since she was about 14.

“If I ever need comfort, there’s always a song [of McRae’s] that relates that I can put on,” Fowler said.

McRae continued her B-stage segment by sitting with only a piano as she reminisced about the beginning stages of her career, getting her start at the age of 14 when she started posting weekly singing videos on her YouTube channel titled “Create with Tate.”

She then sang a medley of fan favorites, including “One Day,” “rubberband” and “you broke me first,” to a crowd that shouted every word back to her.

In the third act of the show, McRae dialed the energy level back up to 100 with her catchiest hits that had the entire arena on its feet and dancing. In the “bloodonmyhands” segment, McRae and her dancers playfully pranced around the stage as she teased an ex-lover with lyrics like “Didn’t think that I’d go / Dance like I can’t be bothered / Know it kills you.”

One of the most emotional moments of the show was when McRae sang “Revolving door,” a powerful song about being stuck in a toxic cycle but continuously making the same choices, even when they’re bad for you. During the bridge, she chanted the words “Supposed to be an adult, but fuck it, I need a minute” before proceeding to sit down for a full minute on stage to take in the moment with her fans.

As the show came to a close, McRae finally whispered the opening lyrics to her hit song, “Sports car,” which the audience was highly anticipating, judging by the sheer volume of cheers and excitement. She finished the show with the final song, her smash hit “greedy,” and the audience was nothing but a sea of screaming fans and confetti.
