USC football is unlikely to play its 2028 home games at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum due to expected delays stemming from the 2028 Summer Olympics and Paralympic Games, sources with knowledge of the situation told the Los Angeles Times. The Times reported Thursday that SoFi Stadium is the most likely temporary replacement.

The Coliseum will install a $100-million temporary track to host track and field events and will also host the opening and closing ceremonies for both Games. The Paralympic Games’ closing ceremony is set for Aug. 27, 2028, while USC’s home opener is currently planned for Sept. 9. That means the track would need to be taken down and replaced with the standard grass for football in just a few weeks, which sources told the L.A. Times was unfeasible.

The track is among the most complicated and expensive adjustments needed to make the Games work in L.A., two Olympic officials told The Times. A comparable track built in Glasgow, Scotland, for the 2014 Commonwealth Games kept Queen’s Park FC out of its home stadium for more than a year.

The University has a lease with the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Commission for operation of the stadium through 2033 with additional options to extend beyond that year.

USC Athletics spokesperson Cody Worsham said in a statement to the Daily Trojan that the University is working with the Olympics and “will share details with the public when they are finalized.”
