BREAKING: The Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences has grouped students and advisers under humanities, natural sciences and social sciences categories for academic advising, according to a Dornsife-wide email sent Friday. Previously, advisers were grouped by individual majors.

This change comes after Dornsife laid off 162 individuals, most of whom were academic support staff, on Oct. 10, giving them preference to fill the 115 new roles in a departmental restructuring.

According to an October email announcing the restructuring, the Dornsife model would have separate hubs for undergraduate student advising, master’s program support, academic and research facilities, as well as a cluster for each of Dornsife’s divisions.

Dornsife’s divisions each contain their own cluster — humanities and social sciences received their own adviser groupings, while life sciences, physical sciences and mathematics are combined under the natural sciences label.

The humanities grouping includes students with majors in the humanities and social sciences, as well as languages and culture. The social sciences grouping includes students with majors in economics and sociology, as well as political science and spatial sciences.

Advisers can be sorted by each of the three clusters on Advise USC, and each adviser has the majors that they specialize in listed beneath their name.
