Yannis Yortsos and Provost Andrew Guzman mutually agreed that Yortsos will step down from his role as dean of the Viterbi School of Engineering, Guzman wrote in a community-wide email Monday. Executive Vice Dean of Viterbi Gaurav Sukhatme will serve as interim dean beginning July 1.

Yortsos is the school’s longest-serving dean after spending 21 years in the role. At the end of the academic year, he will return to a faculty role.

During his time as dean, Yorstos oversaw a period of significant growth and transformation at Viterbi. He championed the Engineering+ initiative, which established interdisciplinary engineering programs across University schools, and played a key role in recruiting and retaining faculty — including 28 who have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering — and raised almost $1 billion for the school, according to the community-wide email.
