USG’s senate met — it took seven minutes

Vice president Emma Fallon said unnecessary bills aren’t created to be “performative.”

No officer reports. No presentations. No new nor unfinished business. On Tuesday night, the Undergraduate Student Government senate met and left in a meeting that barely lasted seven minutes and covered little to no new ground.

After the meeting, vice president Emma Fallon told the Daily Trojan that USG cabinet members, committee chairs and senators sign up for presentations at the beginning of the semester, and no one had signed up to present during Tuesday’s meeting.

With no bills — the senate’s most common action items during meetings — ready to be heard by the senate, that left nothing to be discussed during the time for new or unfinished business. After the meeting, Fallon said creating bills solely to fill the calendar would be irresponsible.

“We don’t want them to be performative,” Fallon said of senate bills. “We want them to be well thought out and be things that we are working on.”

After the senate’s standard land and labor acknowledgement, which lasted roughly one minute, Fallon quickly moved through the empty agenda, going from item seven, the reports of officers and directors, through item 10, announcements of new business, in about 25 seconds.

“The next item on the agenda is reported officers and directors, [of] which there are none. The next item on the agenda is presentations, [of] which there are none. The next item is unfinished business and general order. There is none. The next item on the agenda is new business. There is none,” Fallon said. “The next item on the agenda is announcements. Would any senators like to make any announcements?”

Senator Sudeepta Murthy said during announcements that she is working on extending free Lyft hours for students by talking with Transportation officials on campus. Murthy said a survey asking students for feedback on extension hours will be released soon.

“There is likely to be a change for next year,” Murthy said.

Senator Noa Foruzanfar said she is working to get current grades — both letter grades and percentages — displayed on Brightspace. Currently, Brightspace displays graded assignments. Forunzanfar said she will be sending out a survey to collect student feedback soon.

Following the meeting, senator Zehran Muqtadir said in an interview with the Daily Trojan that he has yet to hear any information from the University on the resolution supporting a unit rollover program in place of the sunset Academic Achievement Award, which the senate passed during its Feb. 24 meeting. Muqtadir, who presented the bill, said he is hoping to hear from administrators by the end of the month.

President-elect Syrabi Nur Rahman said applications for the USG cabinet for her upcoming administration are open and will close March 23.
