Viterbi School of Engineering laid off 65 employees from its information technology workforce, the University reported in a notice to the state and city filed Sept. 1 and obtained by the Daily Trojan on Thursday. The notice read that the layoffs are part of an effort to “restructure [USC’s] information technology operations.”

The layoffs included 14 systems administrators, nine computer services consultants and six programmer analysts. Other affected roles included advisors, web developers and engineers. Some laid off employees worked at the Information Sciences Institute and the Institute for Creative Technologies.

“The University has had to make the difficult decision to regretfully provide notice of position elimination and layoff for certain employees,” the notice read. “The restructure will result in the posting of new positions and provide the opportunity for the impacted individuals to apply for those new positions.”

The Viterbi changes mirrored USC’s approach to laying off academic support staff at Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences last October, when affected employees could apply for new positions within the restructured departments.

The notice marked the first batch of USC layoffs reported this year. The permanent mass layoffs began in October 2024 and reached 1,000 layoffs in November 2025. No additional layoffs had been reported since last November.

According to the notice, layoff notifications began the week of Aug. 31, with the earliest layoff being effective on Nov. 4 and the last on Dec. 3.

In a statement to the Daily Trojan, the University stated the restructuring is part of its long-term planning.

“As we position USC for the future, we are aligning our teams, talent, and resources with the university’s long-term strategic priorities and the evolving needs of our community,” the statement read.
