Women of Troy will finish suspended Stanford match

The No. 15 USC women’s tennis team thought it had finished its regular season.

Not so fast.

The Pac-10 announced today that the USC-Stanford dual meet which was suspended because of rain will be completed Wednesday, the day before the Pac-10 championships are set to begin in Ojai, Calif.

The match between the No. 11 Cardinal and Women of Troy wad tied at 3-3 when the rain made the courts unplayable. The two teams had  completed the singles portion of the dual meet when it was suspended, meaning that three doubles matches will decide the match.

The Pac-10 required the teams to finish the meet because although USC has been eliminated from Pac-10 title contention, No. 8 UCLA can still share the crown with the Cardinal if USC is able to beat Stanford. UCLA is currently 6-1 in conference and Stanford is 7-0.

If Stanford loses, then a dual meet between UCLA and California that was also postponed would be forced to occur, and a UCLA victory would give the Bruins and Cardinal the joint Pac-10 title.

The dual meet will be considered a Stanford home match although it will be played in Ojai, meaning that Stanford’s 161-match home winning streak will be put to the test hundreds of miles away from Palo Alto, Calif.
