Politicians must provide ticket disclosure

Politicians in California must now provide full disclosure on the Internet whenever they receive free tickets for a concert or sporting event, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The new rule was approved Friday by the California Fair Political Practices Commission, which is headed by USC professor Dan Schnur.

The new law was written after reports that Los Angeles Mayer Antonio Villaraigosa received tickets to sporting events, such as Los Angeles Dodgers games, over the past five years.

The rule will be effective in 30 days. Politicans must disclose information about the tickets and events on their official webpages, including a description of who provided the ticket.

“We support openness and transparency in government, and the mayor believes he has fully complied with existing law and will comply with this new rule when it goes into effect,” a Villaraigosa spokesperson said in an e-mail to the Times.
