Bronny James’ cardiac arrest in July is likely due to a congenital heart defect, a family spokesperson announced Friday.
The family is “very confident in Bronny’s full recovery and return to basketball in the very near future,” the press release read, promising to “continue to provide updates to media” and reiterating “the family’s request for privacy.”
An earlier version of this update misstated that the announcement was by doctors.

James is the second men’s basketball player in two years to suffer cardiac arrest, after then-freshman center Vince Iwuchukwu similarly collapsed during practice last July.
Iwuchukwu has since returned to playing basketball, after a 195-day recovery period. It is still unclear whether James can set foot on the court again, at least in the near future.

Incoming freshman LeBron “Bronny” James Jr. suffered cardiac arrest during a USC basketball practice Monday.
Medical staff were able to treat him and take him to the hospital, where he is now in stable condition.
