Local athlete verbally commits to USC
Though USC hit its first speed bump of the year this Saturday with a last-second loss to Washington, the weekend was not a complete waste for the Trojans, as local Dorsey High School junior Jaydon Mickens made a verbal commitment to play for USC.
Mickens is 5-foot-11, 176 pounds, and is an incredibly versatile athlete, playing slot receiver and wildcat quarterback this year for Dorsey, which has previously produced former USC stars such as former wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson and running back Stafon Johnson.
The local prospect looks forward to showcasing all of his talents at USC and believes he can help the program in several different ways.
“I plan to go there as an athlete,” said Mickens. “I can play running back, slot receiver, kickoff returner or wildcat quarterback. I can do everything.”
Mickens, who already has 13 receptions for 231 yards with two touchdowns this season, said he is excited to be staying local by committing to USC as it gives him a chance to play in front of friends and family.
“The thing about USC that stands out is that they always have great athletes and I want to be one of those great athletes,” Mickens said. “It’s not too far from home so my family and friends can come see me.”
Mickens’ verbal commitment makes him the third player in USC’s 2012 class, and he is glad to finally be relieved of the weight of his decision.
“People wanted to know. . . where I was going to play my college ball. It’s just a great experience to know that I am going to go to USC,” he said.
