Annenberg Media’s executive editors put together a petition to reinstate one of the Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism’s “most-loved and most-needed” technical support staffers, Graham Clark Stecklein, in a statement posted to the media organization’s Slack channel Tuesday.

The petition, which currently has 28 signatures from Annenberg students and Annenberg Media editors, will be sent to Annenberg Dean Willow Bay, Journalism school Director Gordon Stables and interim President Beong-Soo Kim after collecting testimonies on Stecklein’s impact.

The University laid off 13 Annenberg employees to meet budget cuts on Aug. 11, including Stecklein. He oversaw new student onboarding, building the Annenberg Media website and app, and general technical support.

“Graham possesses an unrivaled wealth of technical knowledge about our operations, has always been a source of joy and was often the first person that new contributors met,” wrote Annenberg Media executive editor Sophie Sullivan. “Already, so many of us have struggled with back-to-school operations in his absence.”

The statement went on to state that Stecklein’s layoff was a “serious and uninformed error.”

This is a developing story.
