The Undergraduate Student Government announced Zach Garcia as senator after a special election that ran from Sept. 10–12. He will fill the vacancy after the resignation of former senator Dakota Driemeyer for the remainder of the term.

Garcia, a senior majoring in political science, framed his campaign around the mission “Affordable, Accessible, Accountable.” Through this framework, he said he plans to focus on issues such as housing, parking and food insecurity. He emphasized his desire to work with organizations such as USC Student Basic Needs and Trojan Shelter.

“I think I shook over 600 hands throughout campus in the span of three days,” Garcia said in an interview with the Daily Trojan. “But every handshake wasn’t necessarily just a pitch; it was an opportunity to meet a student, to know what their complaints were and to see what ways they would have liked to see the University change. That was an opportunity to advocate for students, and I look forward to doing that.”
