Rodney Hanners, chief executive officer of Keck Medicine of USC, and Carolyn Meltzer, dean of the Keck School of Medicine of USC, are to step down from their roles, effective Sept. 24, according to a statement from President Beong-Soo Kim. Both positions have already been filled.

Hanners has served as CEO of Keck Medicine since 2021. As CEO, Hanners is credited with extending Keck’s care into more communities and creating the Care for a Caregiver program, which “helped foster a culture of kindness and compassion across the Keck community,” according to Kim’s statement.

Steven Shapiro, senior vice president for health affairs, will step into the role of CEO and assume direct operating responsibility for Keck Medicine.

Shapiro began at USC in 2021 after spending seven years as president of the health services division at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. At USC, he served as senior vice president for health affairs and a professor at the Keck School of Medicine.

“By combining [Shapiro’s] direct operational responsibility over Keck Medicine of USC with his continued oversight of the Keck School of Medicine of USC, we can move and innovate even more quickly to extend our renowned clinical care and research throughout the region,” Kim wrote.

Alongside Shapiro, Marty Sargeant, current CEO of the Keck Medical Center of USC, will take over as chief operating officer of Keck Medicine, while continuing as CEO of Keck Medical Center. David Peng, USC’s chief clinical officer, will take over as deputy executive vice president for health affairs.

At the Keck School of Medicine, Dean Meltzer will step down from her position, which she has held since 2022, to assume the role of president of the Radiological Society of North America. Meltzer will stay at USC as a tenured faculty member.

Meltzer is credited with recruiting new faculty members, creating new research opportunities through the University’s Capital Campus and bringing a model of community engagement into the school. In his statement, Kim described Meltzer as a “caring, compassionate and ethical” leader.

Dean of the Mann School of Pharmacy, Vassilios Papadopoulos, will assume the role of interim dean of the Keck School of Medicine. He will continue to serve in both roles following Meltzer’s departure.

“[Papadopoulos] is a deeply experienced and collaborative academic leader who knows USC and its health system well,” Kim wrote. “Under his interim leadership, I am confident that the Keck School will continue to advance its excellence in clinical innovation, research, and education.”
