Burnett Earns Scholarship

With the USC secondary in question late in the season, coach Lane Kiffin, had to resort to some unorthodox measures to get some energy and production back into his team’s defense. One of the bright spots in the move was the play of walk-on safety Tony Burnett.

Burnett, a redshirt junior, burst onto the scene for his solid play and tackling ability in the game against Notre Dame and eventually starting against UCLA. Burnett’s hard work and skill were rewarded as coach Kiffin granted Burnett a scholarship this week.

Burnett looks to compete for playing time this spring in the secondary and is also a member of USC’s track and field team. Burnett was also awarded with the Joe Collins Walk-on Award at the yearend football banquet. He hopes to follow in the footsteps of other USC walk-ons such as current Green Bay Packers linebacker, Clay Matthews, to star for the Trojans and make it to the NFL.
