Track star’s alleged shooters to face trial

Two alleged gang members, Travon Reed and Horasio Kimbrough, are headed to trial tomorrow to face charges in the 2008 non-fatal shooting of USC track star Bryshon Nellum.

Nellum, who was 19 at the time of the shooting, was shot in both thighs and one hamstring, while he was leaving a Halloween Party at Leonardo’s Club and Restaurant on Vermont and 28th Street.

Reed and Kimbrough are suspected gang members, but Nellum’s family insists that Nellum was not involved in any gang related activities and had no known enemies at the time.

At the time of the shooting Nellum was the fastest 19-and-under 400 meter sprinter in the world, according to Ron Allice, USC’s director of track and field.

Nellum, who graduated from Long Beach Polytechnic High School in 2007, held the nationwide high school record for the 200 and 400 sprints. Nellum was also named Gatorade National Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year for the 2006-2007 season.

After the shooting Nellum underwent surgery at California Hospital Medical Center.

Nellum was able to successfully complete physical therapy and remains a sprinter on the Track and Field Team.

The trial will be held at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center on 210 West Temple St.
