Haute Highlights
Throwback Film —Halloween — Aug.26
The Egyptian Theater is screening a triple threat of all three Halloween films. It’s still August, but it’s never too early to get into the spirit of Halloween. Watch as John Carpenter’s ’70s and ’80s classics light up the screen with horror as the homicidal mental hospital patient, Michael Meyers, pursues the quick and witty Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) in a race to the death. Instead of opting for Guillermo del Torro’s eerie Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, revisit the past with cheesy ’80s gore and scare tactics. There’s nothing like an old, scary movie night.
Quirky Goodies — Fonuts
A new bakery-pastry-coffee shop opened yesterday in mid-Wilshire, Los Angeles. Boasting unorthodox donuts, Fonuts serves LAMILL coffee and yeast and cake-based donuts.
The intriguing aspect of Fonuts, aside from the name, is that its donuts are baked rather than fried, producing a scrumptious effect that strays from the traditional practice of donut baking. Fonuts doesn’t stop there. Its menu is riddled with an assortment of more-than-eccentric flavors ranging from Banana Chocolate and Peach to Chorizo Cheddar and Rum.
Started by up-and-coming baker and pastry chef, Waylynn Lucas, Fonuts promises to change the way you experience donuts with their reinvented baking methods and flavors — plus vegan and wheat/gluten free options.
End of Summer Festival — Fiesta La Ballona — Aug. 26 to Aug. 28
Fiesta La Ballona, Culver City’s pride and joy of the summer and a standing tradition since 1951, will be put on this weekend at Veteran’s Park, just off of Culver Boulevard and Overland Avenue. The festival indulges in everything a carnival should be. There are corn dogs and cotton candy aplenty, an eclectic music selection ranging from jazz to Latin, eccentric vendors with a wide collection of jewelry, plenty of arcade games to add another cheesy stuffed animal to your collection and, of course, the rides. Be sure to hop on the dragon boat, the quintessential carnival ride. Get this last taste of summer while you can.
